I4MT - Institute for Intelligent and Interactive Immersive Media and Technologies

The I4MT stands for interdisciplinary cutting-edge research in the field of immersive media and technologies. It emerged in 2022 from the former inter-faculty institute IMMK and currently comprises 21 groups from four departments as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) as members.

The members of the institute work to establish and develop high-level research and teaching in the field of intelligent and interactive immersive technologies and applications. These include in particular:

  • Extended Reality (XR), i.e. Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR).

  • Mediated Reality including Alternate Reality, Diminished Reality, etc.

  • Immersive video formats such as 360-degree videos.
     

Goals of the institute are:

  • the support and coordination of interdisciplinary research in the field of immersive media and technologies between the members as well as in cooperation with national and international partners,

  • the coordination and further development of innovative teaching offers in the field of and with the help of immersive media and technologies for current and future courses of study

  • the transfer of knowledge via research projects and joint activities through exchange with users and cooperation partners, especially in the regional environment

  • the increase of local research competence and international visibility
     

The I3TC - Ilmenau Interactive and Immersive Technologies Center is available for the realization of these goals.
