Form of study

  • The form of study characterizes a course of study based on its chronological sequence and level of qualification. A distinction is made between a first degree program, a second degree program, a consecutive Master program, a postgraduate program, and a continuing education program.

    In contrast, the kind of study describes the relationship between instructors and students in the transmission of knowledge. On-campus study, distance learning, and online study are possible kinds of study.

    The type of studies characterizes the extent to which a student devotes themselve to his studies alongside other activities. Full-time study, part-time study, and dual study are possible types study.
  • First degree program

    Students are considered to be in their first degree program if they are enroled as full-time students in a degree program and have not yet passed a final examination recognized in Germany at a German or foreign university.

  • Second degree program

    A degree program pursued after already earning a university degree in another field of study, for which the first degree is not an admission requirement.

    A consecutive Master program or a continuing education program is not considered a second degree program, since in these cases, completion of the first degree is an admission requirement.

  • Consecutive Master program

    Consecutive Master programs require a Bachelor degree in accordance with the academic regulations or examination regulations. The standard period of study generally does not exceed a total of 5 years until the Master degree is awarded.

    The Master program may build upon and deepen the subject matter of the Bachelor degree or expand upon it in an interdisciplinary manner.

  • Continuing education program

    Continuing education programs consist of courses offered by a university to update a previous university education and to academically analyze experiences gained in professional practice, in order to keep pace with changes in academic developments and the professional world.

    These programs are open to university graduates with professional experience and to applicants who have acquired the necessary qualifications for participation through their profession or by other means.

    As a rule, continuing education programs are taken on a part-time basis alongside work following the completion of a previous Bachelor degree and are subject to tuition fees.
