Students who work exclusively during the lecture-free period do not have to pay additional contributions to health, nursing care and unemployment insurance, regardless of the amount earned, even if the employment lasts longer than three months or 70 working days in a calendar year.

If the employment is limited to a maximum of three months or 70 working days in a calendar year, you are also exempt from pension insurance.

However, the employment must be limited by contract and may not be exercised on a professional basis.

You can find the lecture-free period for each semester in the semester key points. For insurance reasons, it is also important for the employer to know whether the job takes place during the lecture-free period. The university does not issue any further certificates to confirm the lecture-free period beyond the semester key points.

Students in marginal employment are exempt from statutory pension insurance.

Pursuant to § 6 Para. 1 No. 3 SGB V and § 27 Para. 4 Sentence 1 No. 2 SGB III, employment that is carried out alongside studies is exempt from contributions for health, nursing care and unemployment insurance if studies continue to characterize the student's appearance (= regular students). This can generally be assumed if the weekly working hours do not exceed 20 hours.

Students who are in more than marginal employment are subject to health, nursing care and unemployment insurance as well as statutory pension insurance.

An exception applies to persons who complete an internship prescribed in the study or examination regulations during their studies as a regular student at a technical college or university. Such an internship is exempt from pension insurance according to § 5 Para. 3 SGB VI.
