Functional imaging of the retinal microcirculation allows for the assessment of clinically relevant parameters of vessel function. Characteristics of the retinal microcirculation are superimposed onto the image of the ocular fundus. The pictures are termed as functional images, the characteristics as function characteristics. Functions and dysfunctions of the microcirculation that are generally hidden to the ophthalmologist are locally related to the fundus structures by means of these function images and at one glance visible and assessable.
