Founders’ networking ability and the innovation intensity of new ventures: The mediation effect of collaboration network

In their latest paper, Silvia Rita Sedita (University of Padova), Rrezon Lajçi (TU Ilmenau), and Silvia Blasi (University of Verona), examine individual and organizational factors influencing new ventures’ innovation intensity. Their work is published in the International Journal of Innovation Management (IJIM), which is the official journal of the International Society of Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM). In 20233 IJIM reached an Impact Factor of 2.1 and CiteScore of 3.2.

This study empirically investigates the role of founders’ networking ability and firm collaboration network on the innovation intensity of new ventures in the Italian ICT sector. The results show that higher individual networking ability (ability to orient, build, maintain, and coordinate personal network) is not necessarily translated into higher innovation intensity for new ventures. Notwithstanding, the mediation analysis informs that the relationship between founders’ networking ability and the innovation intensity of new ventures is mediated by the firm collaboration network (collaboration in market and technical domains with suppliers, clients, start-ups/companies in the same and other sectors, private consultants, universities and other research institution). In other words, individual networking ability needs to be fueled by appropriate organizational mechanisms that facilitate the transformation of personal abilities into tangible innovative outputs.
