Student life

TU Ilmenau

Students in Ilmenau do not live in anonymity, nor are they spread out over a large area. Normally they live right next to each other on campus or in neighboring residential areas. Whether by foot or bicycle, all restaurants, shopping facilities and, it goes without saying, fellow students are easy to reach. The short distances between classes, living quarters and nightlife guarantee a vibrant campus culture and a personal atmosphere.

Ilmenau's cultural scene, clubs and bars are international and diversified, which can be attributed primarily to the students and their own initiative. The students operate several cafés and popular clubs located around the campus. They work in the university's television and radio station or produce a student feature film that makes the hearts of cineastes beat faster every year. They organize the largest European international student festival (ISWI), for which even Nobel Prize winners travel to Ilmenau. They put together well-known university student conventions or are actively involved in Amnesty International and the university's debating club.

A wide variety of municipal events, concerts of every genre and colourful carnival celebrations invite all to have fun as well. A local recreational area with lakes, located right next to the campus, and the gentle slopes of the Thüringer Wald offer rest and relaxation to all, not only nature lovers.

The range of sports activities leaves nothing to be desired and even offers room for exotic sports, such as robot soccer and American football. Ilmenau, which is famous as a venue for winter sports, is ideally outfitted for the summer too with its heated outdoor swimming pool, idyllic hiking trails and fast summer toboggan-run. During the cold months of the year, the downhill ski slopes, cross-country ski tracks and a new ice pavilion attract large numbers of sports enthusiasts to Ilmenau.

Its close proximity to many culturally historical cities such as ErfurtWeimar, Jena, and Eisenach make Ilmenau the ideal starting point for exploring Germany's (cultural) history. Be it the Wartburg Castle near Eisenach as central structure and starting point of the German Revolution from 1848/49 or the legacies of important figures in Germany's history like Goethe, Schiller, Bach and Luther.

It's not surprising that a letter written by Goethe to Schiller on August 29, 1795 still to this day sums up the character of Ilmenau:
"I always liked being here and still do; I believe, it is because of the harmony that everything exudes here. Region, people, climate, everything that people do and not do. A peaceful economical quest […] and in spite of being relatively isolated the lively traffic with the world as in many small towns in flat, easily accessible areas."
