How will we generate, store, and distribute energy in a climate-neutral future?
How do power grids with 100% renewable energies work?
And how can technical innovation and sustainability be meaningfully combined?
In the bachelor's program in Sustainable Energy Systems at the Technical University of Ilmenau, you will learn to answer these questions with a solid foundation in engineering and natural sciences - and actively contribute to solutions for one of the greatest challenges of our time.
In the Sustainable Energy Systems program at TU Ilmenau, you will first acquire a solid foundation in the natural sciences and engineering, including physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, and chemistry. This will enable you to understand and evaluate sustainable technologies for energy supply. You will then learn the interdisciplinary fundamentals of sustainable energy systems, power systems, electrochemistry, and thermodynamics. You can shape a large part of your studies and your individual path yourself through a very extensive range of electives, but you can also use suggestions and model paths for your studies as a guide. In particular, you can develop your skills in the specialization areas of ‘Renewable Energy Technology’, ‘Electric Power Systems’ or ‘Electrochemistry’. Mentors provide you with individual support as you navigate your way through your studies.
The program also includes a large proportion of project-related courses from the outset. Here, you will be gradually introduced to working on natural science and engineering projects. This includes, in particular, the ability to communicate in the field of energy technology. Your studies will thus open up a particularly wide range of career prospects for you.
The interdisciplinary program in Sustainable Energy Systems optimally prepares you for a career in which you can advance the energy transition. You will not only learn about all aspects of renewable energies, but also gain insights into more general, overarching concepts of sustainability and the circular economy. Thanks to the high proportion of project-oriented modules, you will learn in a practical way how development and research projects are carried out. The program also prepares you directly for a subsequent master's degree, in particular the master's programs in Renewable Energy Technology, Electrical Energy Systems, or Electrochemistry and Electroplating.
Basic subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering)
Fundamentals of sustainable energy systems (fundamentals of sustainable energy technology, power systems, technical thermodynamics, electrochemistry and corrosion)
Sustainability (sustainable development, material and product cycles, sustainability assessment, energy communication)
Elective modules
Project-based modules
Soft skills
Bachelor's thesis
Practical experience during your studies: The practical aspect runs through the entire program, beginning in the first and second semesters with laboratory courses in physics, chemistry, and electrical engineering. In “Sustainable Development,” also in the first semester, local sustainability problems are analyzed and solved in a project-based manner. In the third semester, a practical project on sustainable energy communication is planned. Through research projects and project work in the last two semesters, students learn and apply the implementation of natural science and engineering projects in the field of sustainability, with the project work in the last semester leading directly to the bachelor's thesis.
