The aim of the application is to gain admission to studies at the University in a specific degree program. The application is made for the semester of the intended start of studies.

For this purpose, there is an application period for each program with its academic degree.

The application is made completely electronically in the applicant portal.

Only complete applications submitted during the application period will participate in the application process.

In principle, the Admissions Office pursues the goal of promptly reviewing and approving all applications for study submitted in the Applicant Portal.

Knowledge of the language of instruction and the existence of the university entrance qualification for the desired course of study are checked on the basis of the documents uploaded by the applicant. The result of the examination is announced by providing an admission or rejection notice in the applicant portal.

The number of employees in the Admissions Office is limited, and the number of applications received is unpredictable.

The number of applications received daily is significantly higher towards the end of an application period than at the beginning of an application period. The examination of the admission requirements for a Master's program (formal and subject-related) is more extensive than the examination of the admission requirements for a Bachelor's program (only formal).

Experience shows that the results of the examination are therefore available at a very early stage at the beginning of an application period and earlier for a Bachelor application than for a Master application.

Immediately after you submit your application, the Admission Office will begin reviewing your application.

Please note that the Admission Office will ask queries about your application in a checklist directly in the applicant portal. By responding promptly, you can support the fast processing of your application.

The application takes place completely online in the applicant portal of the TU Ilmenau. Therefore, you should have the documents ready in an electronic format.

The electronic documents required when applying for a degree program and to be uploaded by you are intended to enable the Admissions Office to check your language skills and university entrance qualification with regard to the degree program you wish to pursue.

Only the documents that are actually required for a specific course of study will be requested. Questions to be answered by you in the application in the applicant portal control the selection of documents.

Details of documents of application for studies

The evaluation of certificates of foreign educational institutions according to the German educational system is the prerequisite for the examination of the university entrance qualification. This evaluation is a regular part of the application for studies at the TU Ilmenau and is carried out by the Admissions Office for a fee.

Details on the evaluation of foreign certificates

If you are already in possession of an evaluation by the service provider uni-assist, upload the document in the applicant portal after the Admissions Office has requested payment of the administrative fee. Since an evaluation by uni-assist is already available, the obligation to pay the fee for evaluation of certificates from foreign educational institutions does not apply in this case.

The Master aptitude test is a regular part of the application for a Master program at the TU Ilmenau and is carried out by the departments.

The subject-related examination is usually carried out formally without the presence of the applicant on the basis of the application documents uploaded in the applicant portal. Therefore, please make sure that you upload meaningful and legible documents with the required content.

The evaluation criteria of the subject-related Master aptitude test are specific to the study program. They are regulated in the special provisions of the examination and study regulations of the respective Master's program in the appendix "Special admission requirements".

The TU Ilmenau offers study programs in the teaching languages German and English.

The level for direct admission to studies is in any case C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The level for conditional admission to the Master's program is B2 CEFR.
The level for conditional admission to the Bachelor's program is B1 CEFR.

The prospective student must provide proof of proficiency in the language of instruction of the desired course of study by means of a language certificate at the time of application. The language certificate must be issued by a recognized language institute as the result of an online or face-to-face language test and must be verifiable by means of a test mark.

Prospective foreign students who are not yet in Germany require a visa to enter the country.

After the Admissions Office has provided the notification of admission, prospective foreign students can apply for a "visa for the purpose of study" at foreign missions of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In order not to lose any time, it may be useful to apply for a "visa for the purpose of study application" already after submitting the application in the applicant portal. For this purpose, the Admissions Office provides an application confirmation in the applicant portal.

Details about visa and residence permit

As a result of the application for a study program, the Admissions Office issues an admission notice for the applicant in case of successful determination of the applicant's university entrance qualification.

Please apply regularly via the applicant portal of the TU Ilmenau. After the admissions office has checked your academic and language requirements, you will receive an answer. This will be communicated to you in a decision (admission to study or rejection).

Application and admission details

A Bachelor degree is the entrance requirement for the Master program.

Bachelor degree from a foreign educational institution

Applicants with a Bachelor degree from a foreign educational institution must provide proof of a Bachelor degree certificate with all academic achievements (transcript of records) at the time of application. It is not sufficient to upload an overview of the current academic achievements of the Bachelor degree.

Bachelor degree from a German educational institution

Applicants with a Bachelor degree from a German educational institution can also apply without a Bachelor degree certificate if their Bachelor degree is close in time. It is sufficient to upload an overview of the current academic achievements of the Bachelor degree, on which the temporal proximity to the Bachelor final examination is confirmed.
In this case, admission to the program is subject to the obligation that the Bachelor degree must be proven by the end of the first semester of the Master program.

The following reasons prevent the application from being sent.

Mandatory fields not completely filled

The electronic application form includes mandatory and optional data fields. The application can only be sent within the application period after all mandatory fields have been filled in.

Application period expired

After the last day of the application period 24:00 Central European Time, an application can no longer be sent. Please note the possible time difference in your home country.

Multiple applications per program

Only one application per program can be submitted during the same application period.

An Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung is only required if the new course of study at the TU Ilmenau is related or identical in type to the previous course of study at another university.

With the certificate, the previous examination office confirms that the applicant has not lost his examination entitlement. The Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung also confirms that neither module nor subject examinations were definitively failed in the previous degree program.

The above statement does not have to be made in a separate certificate. It can also be part of the student's transcript of records.

This provides the Admission Office with the formal certainty that the applicant is allowed to complete all required examination achievements in the new degree program at the TU Ilmenau. Among other things, this is a prerequisite for admission to the degree program.
