Description

We want products that function perfectly, look good, last long and are also affordable. Materials scientists research new materials and manufacturing processes that meet these requirements: intelligent functional materials, damage-tolerant composite structures or new types of processing and coating technologies are decisive innovation factors.

Materials scientists learn how different materials are structured and what properties they have. Important aspects here are production, processing, application and disposal. Materials science is an interdisciplinary field that ranges from basic research to the technical and commercial use of modern materials.

The Materials Science course at the TU Ilmenau is a joint course of study with FSU Jena and thus exploits the full potential of both universities. Ilmenau focuses particularly on practical and application-oriented materials technology, while Jena is primarily concerned with the fundamentals of materials science. During the course of study, the courses offered by both universities can be combined to form an individual curriculum.

is also ensured between the bachelor's and master's phases.

Content of study

I chose Ilmenau because it is a small university and I can make so many friends.

Theresa Scheler

Due to the small course of studies, the relationship between employees and students is very personal.

Janine Wessel

Practice during studies

The Bachelor of Materials Science attaches great importance to practical work and the application of the knowledge gained, so that during the course of studies, internships are repeatedly held in the university's own laboratories. In addition, project work is planned for the fifth semester and a 12-week specialist internship for the sixth semester. There is no mandatory basic internship necessary.

Fields of work

  • Research and development departments of industry and state institutions
  • Material producing and processing companies, material analysis
  • Vehicle construction, electrical engineering, electronics
  • Energy technology, energy storage, energy transport and energy conversion
  • Chemical industry, environmental technology, waste disposal and processing
  • Microelectronics and microsystems technology
  • Aerospace and aviation
  • Medical and biomedical technology

Through Ilmenau with Janine and Marcel

Janine and Marcel take you on an exciting tour through the campus of the TU Ilmenau and through Ilmenau itself. They describe how they live and study in Ilmenau, give numerous leisure time tips and insights into the place of study of the Ilmenau University of Technology and take you to hidden places in the city.
