NanoTherMagS

Thermomagnetic rapid test strip based on magnetic nanoparticles for the mobile detection of pathogens

Overview

Project description:

This is a schematic of a rapid test strip that uses heatable, magnetic nanoparticles as marker particles. The strip is detected using a thermal camera that detects heating.

The NanoTherMagS project aims to develop a thermomagnetic rapid test strip that detects pathogens using magnetic nanoparticles. Unlike traditional test strips that use colored marker particles to indicate the test and control lines, this strip will use thermal evaluation. Magnetic nanoparticles are utilized as marker particles to bind to the pathogens for detection. They can be heated by an external alternating magnetic field, and a thermal camera can read the resulting temperature change in case of a positive test. This method enables the detection of pathogens even in optically dense sample media, such as whole blood, where a colored line would not be visible.

The BMTI is synthesising and optimising magnetic nanoparticles with high heating capacity and appropriate surface functionalisation for subsequent antibody coupling.
