DFG large-scale instrument ILMETA

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Project duration: 2020 - 2022

Project description

The research work of the AVT group and thus of the large-scale ILMETA, which is currently under construction, is a central component of the new Center for Immersive and AR/VR/MR Technologies at the TU Ilmenau (I3TC - Ilmenau Interactive Immersive Technologies Center). This center includes, among other things, rooms for VR technology in the new building of the university's IT services center, Media Lab 2 (previously part of the Institute of Media Technology) for the production of high-quality content, and AV test labs for quality assessments.

The large-scale instrument applied for is a system for the production and analysis of high-quality media content, which is the essential measurement signal for algorithms and systems for the processing, encoding, transmission and reproduction of media signals. In this context, the audiovisual (A/V) measurement signals are enriched with metadata at each point of the end-to-end chain and in the context of measurements or user tests.

The research of the department is concerned with the function and application of audiovisual technology. Special focus areas are high-quality and immersive audiovisual technologies and systems, network/IP-based media transmission in the studio and to the user, and interactive multimedia services such as teleconferencing or telepresence systems up to so-called cyber-physical systems. For this purpose, the DFG large-scale facility will procure technically high-quality systems along the entire end-to-end chain of generation, recording, transmission, and playback in order to be able to investigate the corresponding processing steps.
