ViMoPro I

Within the scope of this research project, two main goals are to be achieved:

• Development of a generally valid description of an extended VR model for product development considering the context in terms of products, actors and environments.

• Furthermore, design rules for user interfaces will be defined, which enable a user- and task-oriented interaction with an extended VR model.

To achieve the goals, the following work packages are defined and processed step by step:

Requirements analysis work package

• Derive requirements for the VR model and user interfaces,

• Derivation of generic requirements and tasks of actors, products and environments,

• Evaluation of typical scenarios of product usage based on selected product examples,

• Formulation of usability guidelines for the user interface and

• Definition of initial design guidelines and framework conditions within a style guide.

Work package conception

• Content conception of the VR model to represent the necessary behavior of the product when interacting with the environment and an actor (customer, production planner, etc.).

• Conceptual design of the actor model with cognitive and physical properties relevant for the product life phases. Definition of relevant interactions with the user model and the environment model.

• Conception of the environment model for a valid evaluation of product properties.

Work package development and evaluation

• Development of generally valid design rules and additional requirements for the VR model.

• Implementation of two prototypes using selected examples based on the concept of the VR model as demonstrators and basis of subsequent tests.

• Heuristic and empirical evaluation of the results and integration of potential improvements to optimize the VR model.

• Creation of a guideline with a generally valid project description for the use of the VR model and the design rules for a user-friendly and task-appropriate VR system.

The successful completion of the first project phase resulted in the continuation of the research project as ViMoPro II. The focal points of the overall ViMoPro project can be read on the dedicated project website ViMoPro .

In the course of ViMoPro I, in addition to a description for a technology-independent VR configuration, a VR prototype was created with a vacuum cleaner model that was completely described in SysML. On this basis, a VR system was created that works only with a smartphone but is completely markerless. The state of our SVR2GO system can be viewed here.
