Field of expertise

The research and development work carried out in the department is oriented towards the topic of "Microstructure - Properties - Production Optimization - Component Behavior". Basic and application-oriented questions are addressed and a close industrial cooperation is aimed at.

The department MWV feels connected in the tradition of the Humboldt principle of duality of research and teaching. The goal is a future-oriented and practical education that involves students in active research activities beyond the classical teaching contents and provides insights into state-of-the-art research areas.

Research

The Department of Metallic Materials and Composites (MWV) works on basic and application-oriented research and development projects with different objectives under the guiding principle of "Material technological concepts and solutions for production and manufacturing technology". The focus is on a holistic evaluation of component properties resulting from material properties, manufacturing processes, structural design and component stress. The "classical" materials, steel, copper, nickel, etc., are taken into account, as well as the current "new" materials and material composites, sandwich structures, hybrid materials, metallic foams, etc.

Teaching

The group of metallic materials and composites is represented by courses in various faculties and study programmes - e.g. mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, materials science, electrochemistry and electroplating, industrial engineering and management - in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes as well as in the diploma programme in mechanical engineering. The MWV department also supervises student theses in research and development (also in industry!).

Technical equipment

The technical equipment of the department includes systems and devices for materials testing and analysis (universal testing machines, high-temperature tribometers, dilatometers, microhardness testers), for surface characterization (metallography laboratory, profilometer), for structure and phase analysis (scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer), for heat treatment and for material forming.
