Standard period of study

The examination and study regulations of each degree program include a curriculum of study. The number of semesters specified therein for complete study of the degree program in attendance constitutes the standard period of study for this degree program. The standard period of study is thus related to the study program and is specified in semesters.

At the TU Ilmenau the standard period of study is as follows

  • 6 or 7 semesters for Bachelor programs and
  • 3 or 4 semesters for Master programs.

Individual standard period of study

To avoid pandemic-related disadvantages for students registered at German universities in the semesters SS 2020, WS 2020, SS 2021 or WS 2021, the individual standard period of study was introduced.

For affected students, the individual standard period of study takes the place of the actual program-related standard period of study.

The pandemic-related individual standard period of study can be a maximum of 4 semesters larger than the actual program-related standard period of study.

Contact

Determining whether the standard period of study has been exceeded is a student administration process. The contact person is the Student Office.

Commencement of the fee obligation

The legal basis is the ThürHGEG.

Students who are liable to pay the fee will receive a fee notification from the Student Office immediately before each re-registration period for the following semester.

The obligation to pay the fee for exceeding the standard period of study arises as soon as the number of semesters consumed exceeds the number of semesters credited.

Consumption and credit are calculated as follows.

Postpone or waiver of the fee obligation

There is the option to

  • postpone the fee obligation for the first due date or
  • waiver the fee obligation in case of repeated due date.

The prerequisite is the timely submission of one of the following requests in the re-registration period for the following semester (see semester key points).
