Sexual health, social media, and AI

Media Psychology Group presents at BIÖG Expert Conference
Bundesinstitut für Öffentliche Gesundheit

Since early 2025, the BIÖG (Federal Institute of Public Health) has replaced the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA). The BIÖG's mission is to strengthen public health in Germany. It provides evidence-based health recommendations grounded in cutting-edge research to help all people in Germany live healthier lives for longer.

The Media Psychology and Media Design Group at TU Ilmenau has collaborated with the BZgA and now with the BIÖG for many years. Our contribution focuses in particular on the relevance of digital media—including social media and artificial intelligence—for health communication. At the BIÖG expert conference on sexual and reproductive health and family planning in July 2025 in Berlin, Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring will open the event with a keynote lecture on the role of AI in sexuality education. In a workshop, she will also present empirical findings from the independent EMSA research project funded by the BIÖG, which investigates how topics such as sexual debut, menstruation, and pregnancy termination are discussed on social media. Finally, Prof. Döring will take part in the closing panel discussion on future challenges in the field of reproductive and sexual health.

Research

Complex scientific questions and problems can often not be solved from the perspective of a single science alone. Interdisciplinarity, i.e. interdisciplinary cooperation, is therefore of great importance. Both inter-department cooperation at the TU Ilmenau and beyond its borders bundle competences and are an indispensable part of research at the IfMK.
