When the internet became established among broader sections of the population in the 1990s, so-called "internet sexuality" emerged simultaneously. In the 2020s, with the popularization of artificial intelligence tools, "AI sexuality" is now developing.
The Media Psychology and Media Design Group at TU Ilmenau, in collaboration with international experts from Switzerland and the USA, has published a first research overview on this emerging field of research and practice in Current Sexual Health Reports (CSHR, Springer Nature). The study systematically examined 88 publications from 2020 to 2024, addressing four aspects of AI sexuality: (1) AI-generated sexual information, (2) AI-assisted sexual counseling and therapy, (3) AI agents as sexual partners, and (4) AI-generated pornography.
