In Germany - as in most European countries - prostitution is legal. However, the business sector is subject to various special rules. Human rights organizations and the Council of Europe are calling for complete decriminalization, while the CDU/CSU is calling for the introduction of criminalization of clients. Against this backdrop, a survey conducted by the Media Psychology and Media Design Group at Ilmenau University of Technology at the end of 2023 examined public opinion on the regulation of prostitution. N=3,032 adults from all federal states took part in the nationwide online survey. Results were published in the journal “Neue Kriminalpolitik”. As the vast majority of people in Germany have no first-hand experience of offering or requesting sexual services, opinions are largely shaped by media portrayals.
