Older Adults’ Perspectives on Robot-Mediated Communication

Group Media Psychology at the HRI 2024 Conference

The research project CO-HUMANICS at TU Ilmenau aims to develop innovative technologies that promote the social integration of older adults. Telepresence robots are increasingly studied in the context of communication between older adults and their distantly located family members and friends. However, little is known about older adults’ expectations of robot-mediated interpersonal communication.

Therefore, the Media Psychology Group developed personas representing three archetypal older users based on interviews with N=30 adults over the age of 60 from Germany. Each persona is presented in a specific communication scenario with individual goals. These personas are tools that can help designers to target older adults in the robot-mediated communication market. The study was conducted in cooperation with the Audiovisual Technology Group within the work package Evaluation and the results are presented at the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human Robot Interaction 2024 (HRI 2024) in Boulder, Colorado (USA).
