The abundance of gender and sexual identities has recently become much more visible in society. Digital media in particular have contributed to this development. They make it possible to comprehensively present identities to the public that are at best marginalized in the mass media. The effects are ambivalent: the visibility of queerness in the media goes hand in hand with empowerment, but also with increasing anti-queerness. How should media education deal with the situation? Prof. Döring from the Media Psychology and Media Design Group at Technische Universität Ilmenau presents the current state of research on queerness in media education. The article has been published in merz – Zeitschrift für Medienpädagogik.
