Short curriculum vitae

Prof. Dirk Westermann studied electrical engineering and received his doctorate from the University of Dortmund in 1997. After holding various positions in management and R&D at a manufacturer of energy technology systems and components with an international focus, he moved to TU Ilmenau as Professor and Head of the Power Systems Group. Since spring 2019, he has also headed the Thuringian Energy Research Institute (ThEFI) and the Center for Energy Technology (ZET). His current research focuses on the operation and design of power systems with a high proportion of renewable energies, in particular technologies such as HVDC and the next generation of system operation technology with assistance systems. Since October 2023 he is Chair of the IEEE PES Chapter Germany. Prof. Westermann is active in numerous national and international committees in the energy sector.
