Directions

Ilmenau is quite easy to reach by train from Erfurt, the capital of the Free State of Thuringia. From Erfurt there are trains leaving every hour, and after about an hour's journey through the picturesque hilly landscape of the Thuringian basin, they reach Ilmenau. Those coming from Saalfeld or Schweinfurt can already change trains in Arnstadt.

Erfurt is also the nearest airport Erfurt-Weimar.

Ilmenau can be reached by car on different ways. The federal highways B4 (Coburg-Ilmenau-Erfurt), B87 (Ilmenau-Weimar) and B88 (Rudolstadt-Ilmenau-Eisenach) cross in Ilmenau.
The nearest freeway is the A71, which runs from the north from the Erfurt freeway junction (A4) to Ilmenau-Ost and Ilmenau-West. From the south, the A73 freeway from Nuremberg meets the A71 freeway from Schweinfurt at the Suhl junction. From Ilmenau-Ost the way to TU Ilmenau is signposted.
