Since March 1, 2021, the Department of Plastics Technology at TU Ilmenau has been headed by the jointly appointed Professor Dr.-Ing. Florian Puch, who is also Scientific Director of the Thuringian Institute for Textile and Plastics Research, an affiliated institute of TU Ilmenau. The aim of the joint professorship is to cover the entire research value chain from basic research to industrial transfer for the plastics industry in Thuringia and beyond.

The Department of Plastics Technology was established in 2009 via the endowed professorship for plastics technology at TU Ilmenau by the Foundation for Research and Technology, industrial companies and PolymerMat e.V. and continued from 2014 to 2017 by the founders via the FKTI support association.

The Department of Plastics Technology is part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and does justice to the great importance of plastics in everyday life and their economic significance for Thuringia.
