Emese Domahidi ist seit Oktober 2017 Professorin für Kommunikationswissenschaft, insb. Computational Communication Science an der Technischen Universität Ilmenau (zunächst als Juniorprofessorin, seit 2022 als Universitätsprofessorin).
Bevor sie den Ruf an die Technische Universität Ilmenau annahm, war sie als Postdoktorandin in der Gruppe Social Media bei Prof. Dr. Sonja Utz am Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien in Tübingen tätig (August 2015 bis September 2017). Während ihrer Promotionszeit arbeitete sie als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im ERC-Projekt "The social fabric of virtual life: Eine Längsschnittstudie über die sozialen Grundlagen des Online-Gaming (SOFOGA)" mit Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt zunächst an der Universität Hohenheim (Januar 2010 bis September 2012) und anschließend an der Universität Münster ( Oktober 2012 bis Mai 2015). Im September 2015 promovierte sie sich mit ihrer Arbeit "Online Mediennutzung und wahrgenommenen soziale Ressourcen. Eine Metaanalyse" an der Universität Münster.
Emese Domahidi studierte Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft, Neuere deutsche Literatur und Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin.
Emese Domahidi untersucht in ihrer Forschung die Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung auf gesellschaftliche und individuelle Kommunikationsprozesse sowie auf die Methoden der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Methodisch liegt ihr Fokus auf dem Einsatz computationaler Methoden und digitaler Daten zur Analyse kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen. Dazu gehört die Entwicklung und Anwendung innovativer Methoden, um neue, durch die Digitalisierung entstandene Kommunikationsformen besser zu verstehen. Ein zentraler Aspekt ist dabei die Evaluation dieser Methoden, etwa um Bias bei der Klassifikation von Inhalten zu identifizieren.
Inhaltlich konzentriert sich ihre Forschung auf zwei Hauptbereiche: Zum einen untersucht sie problematische Öffentlichkeiten, insbesondere im Kontext antidemokratischer Akteure. Dabei analysiert sie, wie diese Akteure Netzwerke bilden, in klassische politische Öffentlichkeiten vordringen und welche Inhalte sie verbreiten. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Rolle medialer Verzerrungen, wie etwa geschlechterstereotyper Darstellungen von Politikerinnen und Politikern. Zum anderen widmet sie sich der individuellen medienvermittelten Kommunikation, insbesondere der Frage, wie Mediennutzung mit der mentalen Gesundheit von Individuen zusammenhängt.
Emese Domahidi arbeitet an diesen Themen auch im Rahmen von Drittmittelprojekten, die unter anderem von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) sowie der Thüringer Aufbaubank (TAB) gefördert werden. Ihre Forschungsergebnisse sind in zahlreichen führenden Fachzeitschriften der Kommunikationswissenschaft veröffentlicht.
