Research Unit High-Voltage Technologies

The Research Unit High-Voltage Technologies was founded in September 2010 as a strategy unit with relevant research topics under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Leu. This type of research unit was established in strategic and future-oriented areas by the Presidential Board in consultation with the Senate. The background to this is the formation of focal points within the framework of the long-term research strategy and the bundling of resources at TU Ilmenau. Since 2020, the research unit has been part of the Advanced Electromagnetics Group headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hannes Töpfer.

The research unit investigates the effects of very high voltages and electric field strengths on insulating materials and insulating systems. At present, the research work is concentrating on the effects of composite voltages and switching processes at DC voltage, as they will increasingly occur in the power supply networks of the future.

Research is carried out at the Center for Energy Technology, predominantly in conjunction with the departments and research units organized in the inter-faculty Thuringian Energy Research Institute.

In addition to research in the field of high-voltage technology, the research unit takes on teaching assignments in the field of general electrical engineering under the direction of the Teaching Unit Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering.
