For many years, successful work on and with industrial property rights has been carried out at the TU Ilmenau. A legal assurance of research and development results is necessary for several reasons, e.g. in case of acquiring third-party funding for financing research work; a successful company spin-off or the marketing of these results. At TU Ilmenau the right contact person on these matters is Dr. Günter Mosel from PATON | Landespatentzentrum Thüringen. Mr Mosel provides expert advice and support for TU Ilmenau staff members and students and is responsible for drawing up, obtaining, maintaining, defending, releasing and transferring industrial property rights with the TU Ilmenau registered as rights holder.
On 9 October 2012 the Senate of TU Ilmenau decided on the guidelines for the management of intellectual property at the Ilmenau University of Technology.
In addition, a bonus tool was introduced in January 2018 to reduce administrative burdens (Rector's Notice 5/2018). It is applicable to all inventions fully applied for as of 01.01.2018.
On 13 February 2024, the handout "Path to a trademark at TU Ilmenau" was presented to the Research Committee. It describes how services and products of TU Ilmenau can be protected by registered trademarks.
