Brief description

Digitization is the topic of our time: In the Internet of Things, everyday objects communicate with each other, in Industry 4.0, goods are produced in automated processes, and cars are able to drive autonomously. Modern applications like these are realized through the combination of specialized software and hardware developed by engineering computer scientists for new, innovative products. The core task of engineering computer scientists is to ensure the optimal interaction of hardware and software.

During your studies of engineering informatics you will learn the basics of electrical engineering, electronics and computer science. You design, implement, test and improve complex systems. This also includes the design of application-specific hardware and software. With the help of computer-simulated models, you reproduce the functionality of real applications such as cell phones, medical devices, robots or motor vehicles. Abstract and analytical thinking are therefore among the basic requirements of the course.

In laboratory practicals, you will consolidate your knowledge from your lectures and seminars in practice, program algorithms, carry out experiments, build circuits independently and develop software solutions for a wide range of applications. From the 5th semester onwards, you can specialize in the elective area of your bachelor's degree and prepare yourself for the focus areas of your master's degree, such as communication networks, robotics, embedded systems or biomedical engineering.

As a graduate of this program, you will be in demand both in industry and in research.

Computer Engineering is the best compromise between computer science and electrical engineering, because here you combine software and hardware development.

Why Ilmenau?

During your studies in engineering informatics, you will not only learn the basics of engineering and computer science. Laboratory practicals are part of many subjects such as electrical engineering, physics or machine learning and help you to apply your theoretical knowledge. In a mandatory software project, you will practice implementing larger development tasks in a team, from requirements determination to implementation, together with computer scientists and business informatics specialists.

As a student, you will be involved in future-oriented cutting-edge research projects at an early stage. You will learn how innovative products are developed and establish contacts with industry while still a student. In the UNIKAT student workshop, you can practice your handicraft skills and program and assemble your own small products. As an engineering student, "practicING" gives you the opportunity to expand your studies with additional practical courses and implement projects in a team.

Mona and Dominik study Computer Engineering at the TU Ilmenau

Through Ilmenau with Janine and Marcel

Janine and Marcel take you on an exciting tour through the campus of the TU Ilmenau and through Ilmenau itself. They describe how they live and study in Ilmenau, give numerous leisure time tips and insights into the place of study of the Ilmenau University of Technology and take you to hidden places in the city.
