As a rule Funding is usually possible for a maximum of 3 years. A further extension is only possible in exceptional cases and is ranked after the new applications and applications for the second and, if applicable, third year of funding.
The scholarship will be awarded for one year(awarding period). An application for an extension must be submitted within the application term, but no later than two months before the end of the current appropriation period.
The third year can be awarded if the completion of the doctorate is expected at the end of the three-year funding period. The applicant as well as the supervisor should credibly demonstrate the scientific progress and the timely successful completion, usually through a personal interview. In addition to the presentation of the research results and a detailed progress report, evidence of publications must be submitted.
The reference to a possible follow-up financing after the third year is not a reason for an extension after two years of funding.
When submitting an application for extension, please include the following:
- A letter of application indicating the desired extending awarding period (max. one DIN-A4 page);
- A completely filled out form for the application for doctoral scholarship
- A chronological and topic oriented report on the course of previous research, including details on the research and time schedule needed to finish the project
- A supervisor’s assessment of the PhD candidate’s report (Further approval for the second year of funding)
- For the approval of a third year of funding, a presentation of the work status achieved by the doctoral candidate in the award committee is provided at the end of the second year. Furthermore, a statement is expected from the supervising university professor, stating that the doctoral thesis will be completed in the third year
- A current confirmation of enrollment
- A current declaration of income and bank account information and a current declaration of data privacy protection
