E4SM - Engineering for Smart Manufacturing

The research project Engineering for Smart Manufacturing (E4SM) aims to study innovative methods for developing assistance systems for smart manufacturing in industrial scenarios based on machine learning. In the context of Industry 4.0, particularly the requirements and specifics for manufacturing in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) shall be considered. The methods to be researched and developed within the scope of this project will be applied to two industrial scenarios: fixture-free laser beam welding and versatile manufacturing. The focus is on integrated and holistic engineering methods for the application of learning-based assistance systems in manufacturing. Therefore, developed partial solutions in the important core areas of collaborative assistive robotics, management and analysis of heterogeneous data from industrial manufacturing processes, as well as IT security and IT safety are to be integrated into a holistic software engineering process. Besides, the inclusion of industrial partners will help to make the application of machine learning and assistance systems more projectable and controllable for SMEs in order to lower the acceptance threshold.
