Sexuality and Disabilities

Research Group Media Psychology edits Special Issue of German Journal of Sexuality Research

Around 15% of the world's population lives with mental, emotional and/or physical disabilities. According to the World Health Organization WHO, people with disabilities form the numerically largest social minority. Despite this, the topic of "sexuality and disability" is often regarded as a kind of "double taboo". This is because both sexuality and disability are still partly surrounded by feelings of shame and guilt, insecurities, fears and speechlessness. Therefore, research projects and practical measures are needed that make the sexualities of people with impairments visible, normalize them and promote self-determined sexuality, partnership and family planning.

The specials issue of the German Journal of Sexual Research (“Zeitschrift für Sexualforchung”, issue 3/2021; Thieme Verlag), edited by Prof. Döring of the Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design at the Technical University of Ilmenau, is dedicated to research and practice projects on the sexual and reproductive health and rights of people with disabilities. Digital media and technologies play an important role in this.
