Systematically analyzing the content of contemporary representations of sexuality in different media is of practical relevance. After all, representations of sexuality in the media can influence the attitudes and behavior of the audience. In a research collaboration, the Media Psychology and Media Design Group at TU Ilmenau investigated the question of how sexual interactions are portrayed in popular Netflix series.
Seven popular Netflix series were selected (Bridgerton, Dark Desire, Elite, Sex Education, Sex/Life, The Witcher, You), which are known for showing sexual scenes. All N=271 mixed-gender sex scenes that were shown in the previous episodes of the series were extracted. Against the background of gender role and sexual script theories, it was determined who initiates sex, which sexual acts are shown and who is shown having an orgasm. The study has been published in the journal “Sex Roles” (Springer Nature).
