iRisCS-Com researches the structural, content-related and social dimensions of risk, crisis and science communication. Various threats such as natural disasters, pandemics, wars, climate change or organizational crises are considered. Emerging technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, autonomous mobility) and innovative fields of science (e.g. astrobiology) are researched in the context of science communication. iRisCS-Com and the TU Ilmenau are among the most productive research centers for risk and crisis communication in Germany (see Scopus analysis). Studies by the research group have been published in the leading international journals for risk and crisis communication research, including the Journal of Risk Research, International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, Risk Analysis, Health Communication, and Public Relations Review. The research and networking activities of iRisCS-Com have been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the COST program and the European Union, the Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG), and the Free State of Thuringia/Thüringer Aufbaubank.
iRisCS-Com's research and teaching focuses on (1) crisis and disaster communication; (2) risk communication; (3) communication with and about technology; and (4) science communication.
