Priv.-Doz. Dr. habil. Andreas Schwarz is head of the International Risk, Crisis, and Science Communication Research Group (iRisCS-Com) at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies (IfMK) at Ilmenau University of Technology. From 2017 to 2023, Schwarz was (acting) Head of the Department of Public Relations and Technology Communication at the IfMK. From 2012 to 2015, he was Managing Head of the Department of Media Studies, where he previously worked as a research assistant from 2004 to 2010. From 2006 to 2017, he was managing director and from 2017 to 2025 co-director of iRisCS-Com's predecessor: the International Research Group on Crisis Communication (IRGoCC). Andreas Schwarz was founding chair of the Risk and Crisis Communication Section of the European Communication Research and Education Association ECREA (2011-2018): ECREA Crisis Communication Section.
His research and teaching focuses on risk and crisis communication in the context of natural disasters, pandemics, climate change and organizational crises in the non-profit sector. He also conducts research into technology communication (artificial intelligence, autonomous mobility), science communication (space exploration, astrobiology), PR and journalism. His research and networking activities have been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the COST program and the European Union, the Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Free State of Thuringia/Thüringer Aufbaubank.
Andreas Schwarz has published in academic journals such as Risk Analysis, Science Communication, Health Communication, Journal of Risk Research, International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, International Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, Public Relations Review, Corporate Communications, International Journal of Strategic Communication, Communications, and the Journal of Public Relations Research. He is co-editor of the Handbook of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research published in 2016 and 2025 (Wiley Blackwell Publishing).
Andreas Schwarz has been a guest lecturer in Bulgaria, the UK, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Indonesia and the USA. He has presented the results of his research at international conferences in numerous European, North and South American and Asian countries. In addition, he advises private and public organizations on crisis communication issues and regularly gives workshops on this topic.
