Production engineering is a pillar of mechanical engineering. The Department of Manufacturing Engineering has a history of over 60 years of research and teaching. During this time, the scientists of the department have been active in several areas of manufacturing technology and have been able to actively shape the change in production. Today, the focus of the department is on solid state welding welding, laser material processing, arc welding technology and machining. The Department of Manufacturing Technology is a member of the Institutes for Micro- and Nanotechnology and for Mobility Research.
The department also operates within the Thuringian Center for Mechanical Engineering and is a member of the Research Association of the German Association for Welding and Allied Processes and of FOSTA - Forschungsvereinigung Stahlanwendung e. V. (Research Association for Steel Applications).
Selected projects are funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) of the European Union.
Hands-on digitization - distributed throughout Thuringia by the partners and model factories at the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Ilmenau.
The research and innovation network Chemnitz-Ilmenau-Magdeburg(CHIM) between the three locations in Chemnitz, Ilmenau and Magdeburg
The ProKI-Ilmenau center is a supporting partner for SMEs in the introduction and integration of artificial intelligence in production processes.
The performance center InSignA bundles the competence of five Fraunhofer Institutes and the TU Ilmenau regarding intelligent signal analysis and assistance systems.
The ThZM is the innovation partner for the manufacturing industry in the application of modern mechanical engineering technologies.
The ThiMo pursues the goal of accompanying the industry's transformation to sustainable mobility technologies.
The Institute for Micro- and Nanotechnologies is a cross-faculty, scientific institute of the TU Ilmenau.
The WLT stands for the scientific advancement of the laser beam as a tool and the creation of new fields of application.
