Communication networks

The TU Ilmenau has been connected to the German Research Network (DFN) since 1991.

The DFN offers universities and universities of applied sciences as well as affiliated research institutions in Germany a very powerful communication infrastructure for data exchange among each other. Corresponding connections to other European and international networks are used to connect to the global Internet.

In the UniRZ of the TU Ilmenau, DFN operates a core network node that supplies universities, universities of applied sciences and research institutions in Thuringia and Bavaria with network.

The TU Ilmenau is currently connected to the core network node with a bandwidth of 10 GBit/s.

TUILM-Internet

A virtual private network (VPN) allows members of an organization to access resources in the organization's computer network from any end devices on the Internet. Access to the respective network can also take place in accordance with defined security requirements. By using VPN technology, authenticated and encrypted communication channels (tunnels) can be established over the Internet. The transmitted information is thus protected.

The TU Ilmenau offers its users VPN access to the university network (TUILAN) via the UniRZ. This allows them to use the services offered from home or on the road.

This service is used to offer official mobile phone contracts via the DFN framework agreement.

TUILM-VoIP-UMS

The Wireless LAN of the TU provides wireless access to the data network of the TU Ilmenau (TUILAN) as well as to the Internet. As far as technically possible, the buildings of the university are equipped with access points in such a way that area-wide coverage is provided within them. In areas without WLAN coverage, public landline sockets are available.

TUILM-WLAN

The WLAN SSID eduroam can be used by employees and students of institutions participating in the DFN roaming service. In addition, it is possible to temporarily provide an SSID TUI-Guest in individual buildings. Using this SSID, guests from other institutions can use Internet connections via the WLAN with an account provided by UniRZ.

TUILM-WLAN Conference

Almost all dormitories on the campus of the TU Ilmenau have a connection to the data network. The construction and operation of these networks is based on a cooperation between the UniRZ, the Studierendenwerk Thüringen and the Forschungsgemeinschaft elektronische Medien e.V. (FeM). More information can be found on the homepage of the association at https://www.fem.tu-ilmenau.de.

In the area covered by this cooperation, there is no explicit coverage with the WLAN of the TU-Ilmenau (eduroam). The FeM operates its own WLAN within the dormitories. It is also not necessary to use the VPN, as one is already within TUILAN there and can thus access the services offered by TU Ilmenau for its members.
