Flyer for the Double Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering
Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia and consists of two parts separated by the South China Sea. Malaysia borders Thailand to the north, Singapore to the south and Indonesia to the east. The tropical climate provides hot temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. Malaysia is rich in natural resources, especially oil. The economy has developed rapidly since the 1990s. Malaysia is one of the most politically and economically stable countries in Southeast Asia. The state religion is Islam, although there is general freedom of religion. The official language is Malay. Due to the long British colonial period, English is the second language for the vast majority of Malaysians, and often the language of instruction, so it is easy to communicate in English throughout Malaysia.
The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is one of the leading universities in Malaysia. It is the best university in Malaysia in the field of "Engineering & Technology" and has a high reputation in the entire Southeast Asian region. The total number of students is 21,471 (as of 2010), spread over a campus in Johor Bahru near Singapore and a campus in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur. In addition to its 14 faculties, UTM has 28 Centers of Excellence dedicated to technology and research education. UTM aims to become a world-class university. For this reason, the Faculty of Biomedical & Health Science Engineering has developed an interdisciplinary Master's program in Biomedical Engineering.
The double degree program is integrated into the existing biomedical engineering courses at both universities. The double degree is intended to give above-average students the opportunity to gain international experience, particularly in an Asian and Muslim cultural environment. The participating students are offered added value through their stay at the partner university, among other things by enabling an interdisciplinary education in biomedical specialization areas that cannot be offered at their home university. Further added value is provided by the inter-/multidisciplinary perspectives on problem solutions from different specialist cultures. For German students, participation in the double master's program can be an essential part of their professional preparation for working in internationally oriented companies.
Students at both universities begin their Master's degree program with one semester at their home university. In the short version, either the 2nd or 3rd semester takes place at UTM. In the long version, students attend the lectures and complete the credit points of the 2nd semester as well as the Master's thesis (3rd semester) at the partner university. The topic of the Master's thesis is agreed jointly with the supervisor at the partner university and the supervisor at the home university. An overview of the study plan can be found in the study regulations for the degree program Biomedical Engineering with the degree “Master of Science”.
Participants in the double degree program are selected and admitted by a joint committee consisting of participants from both universities. If there is more than one applicant, a decision is made based on grade point average and level of preparation.
The Master's thesis is jointly supervised and assessed by both universities. A member of staff from the home university and a member of staff from the partner university each supervise the thesis and prepare a report after completion of the thesis, which is included in the overall grade in equal parts. The credits earned are converted into the respective grading system according to the EU-ASEAN Credit Transfer System (EACTS) and mutually recognized. The conversion tables are listed in the Master's examination regulations for the Biomedical Engineering degree program (MPO-BB). Graduates of the program receive a Master of Engineering (Biomedical) from the UTM and a Master of Science (Biomedical Engineering) from the TU Ilmenau.
There are 4-5 places available per year for students in the double degree program. Students pay tuition fees during their participation (whether in Germany or abroad) in the double degree program exclusively at their home university, whereby the TU Ilmenau does not charge tuition fees. Financial support during the stay abroad is possible.
