Internationally, biomedical engineering is firmly established as an independent, interdisciplinary university subject. The situation in the USA is typical of the development in highly developed industrialized countries: there are integrated biomedical engineering programs (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral) at about 100 universities. As Gewin notes in an article in Nature:

"The total number of undergraduate BME programs has doubled in the last five years."

The reason for this progressive development is the job market for biomedical engineering graduates, which has been booming for many years:

"Job prospects are bright in biomedical engineering (BME), which combines engineering design skills with biological expertise [...]. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of BME jobs in the United States is expected to grow by 31.4% over the next seven years, more than twice the average projected growth rate for other fields.

This statement can be applied without restriction to the expected development in other industrialized countries - e.g. in Europe:

"Job opportunities in the industry will remain good [...] In the coming years we will need a gradually increasing number of biomedical engineers. - Arjen Schat, European Recruitment Manager, Philips Medical Systems, Eindhoven

This is particularly true for Germany with its efficient medical technology industry and similarly highly developed medical research and clinical infrastructure. In this context, it should be noted that an above-average number of research-oriented (university) graduates are needed in the field of biomedical engineering - partly due to the disproportionately high amount of methodical preliminary and application research required for the development of medical technology products and systems, which is largely carried out by BMT engineers.

The standard period of study for the bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering is 7 semesters (including internship and bachelor's thesis).

The EU mobility program ERASMUS offers funding opportunities for partial studies.

With a consecutive 3-semester master's program at the TU Ilmenau, students can obtain a well-founded university qualification that qualifies them for demanding tasks in medical or medical-technical research and development, in application and in technical management.
