Teaching at the BMTI Institute

The BMTI Institute runs the Biomedical Engineering degree programs (Bachelor’s and Master’s) as well as the English-taught ‘Biomedical Engineering by Research’ program. Our degree programs are strongly research-oriented and offer an excellent student-tutor ratio.

Furthermore, the institute is involved in the following interdisciplinary Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Engineering Informatics
  • Computer Science
  • Industrial Engineering

Researchers at Ilmenau are working on the development of new methods in the field of:

  • Ophthalmic technology
  • Measurement and stimulation technology
  • Data analysis, modelling and inverse methods
  • Medical imaging and radiological technology
  • Medical information systems

Studying at the BMTI

What is biomedical engineering?

Biomedical Engineering (BME) is engineering for life. Its aim is the research and development of technology-based methods and systems for early detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. BME is a multidisciplinary field of science at the interface between medicine and engineering. Recent studies rank it amongst the top ten technologies of the 21st century.

The market for medical technology products and systems is one of the most attractive growth markets globally. The German medical technology industry occupies a leading position in the global market for medical technology products. It ranks third behind the USA and Japan. Career prospects for graduates are considered excellent in both the medium and long term.

What can you study at the BMTI?

The BMTI Institute, through its groups, runs the Bachelor’s degree program in “Biomedical Engineering”, the Master’s degree program in “Biomedical Engineering” and the English-taught Master’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering by Research

Furthermore, the Institute is involved in the following interdisciplinary Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes:

  •     Electrical Engineering
  •     Engineering Informatics
  •     Computer Science
  •     Industrial Engineering

In addition, the Institute’s educational offering includes a comprehensive PhD program.

Why study at the BMTI?

Graduates from Ilmenau possess a sound foundation in engineering, outstanding methodological skills, a keen understanding of current medical issues and practical medical knowledge. This enables them to play an effective role as partners to doctors in clinical practice, in medical technology research and development, in application, and in a wide range of other fields within the medical technology industry.

A wide range of work placements, practical exercises and independent development projects throughout the course ensure a strong practical focus. The specialist work placement in the Bachelor’s program involves a self-contained, practice-oriented project in healthcare, industry or research. The design project in the Master’s program enables students to work independently on a task drawn from the institute’s range of teaching and research activities.

The participating institutes’ strong research focus enables students to contribute to cutting-edge and highly relevant research topics in the following areas:

  •     Ophthalmic technology,
  •     Measurement and stimulation technology,
  •     Data analysis, modelling and inverse methods,
  •     Medical imaging and radiological technology,
  •     Medical information systems.

Partner institutions and companies in the USA, Europe and Japan offer opportunities for students to undertake part of their studies or specialist work placements, depending on their individual circumstances and preferences.
