Caro studies mathematics and business mathematics

Our Master's student Carolin talks about her mathematics studies at TU Ilmenau and gives an interesting insight into the study conditions and the diverse joint activities of the students, also besides the courses.

Mathematics is in almost everything - that is something that makes studying mathematics particularly exciting for Caro. And the familiar relationship between professors and students creates a study atmosphere in which you can feel comfortable.

... in Ilmenau is made up of a 6-semester Bachelor's degree and a 4-semester Master' s degree that builds on it; in fact, most of our students complete both degrees at TU Ilmenau.

The Bachelor's programme is structured in such a way that it ensures a wide mathematical breadth. The aim of the Bachelor's programme in Mathematics is to provide students with a very solid basic mathematical knowledge as well as knowledge in mathematical modelling, computer science and a non-mathematical application subject. If the application subject is chosen appropriately, master's degree programmes in computer science, an economics subject or a technical subject are also open after the bachelor's degree.

The Master's programme in Mathematics and Business Mathematics can be completed in the following two fields of study: The Applied Mathematics major module is primarily oriented towards a broad applicability in mathematical-scientific research in high-tech companies and in the mathematisation of interesting fields of work in medicine, biology and economics. This goal is served by a solid knowledge base in functional analysis, theory and numerics of partial differential equations and, depending on the chosen specialisation, e.g. courses on control and optimal control, chip design, coding theory and scientific computing. In the specialisation module in business mathematics, students receive a solid education in stochastics and its fundamentals from analysis and optimisation, as well as an insight into modern methods of risk management, the valuation of financial derivatives and stochastic optimisation.

Mentoring programme

In order to support the students of mathematics in their studies, the Institute of Mathematics offers a mentoring program. In case of occurring problems or constructive suggestions to improve the education of our students, they can contact the mentor of the Institute of Mathematics Prof.Dr. Thomas Hotz.
