ZIB's Educational Video Studio - Your Easy Way to Video Content

Purpose

The Central Institute of Education's instructional video studio is designed for recording high-quality, short instructional videos. The studio allows recording in such a way that, as a rule, no post-processing is required. The videos can then be integrated into e-learning offerings, for example, or used for other purposes.

No special technical knowledge is required for use. The focus was deliberately placed on the prepared recording scenarios and not on the technology.

Functional description

The operation of the complete studio is largely automated via a touch panel of a media control on a speaker's desk.

Six recording scenarios can be selected, through which various presentation sources are activated. These sources are an internal PC with office software and Internet access installed in the whiteboard, a document camera, a small handheld camera or the user's own laptop. The individual scenarios are explained in detail below in the section Recording scenarios.

The video source predefined by the currently selected scenario is displayed on an interactive whiteboard or touch display that is more than two meters wide (Figure 1).

A room camera (Fig. 2) is permanently installed on the wall opposite the interactive whiteboard. After recording starts, the camera records everything within its field of view. As a rule, this is the teacher, what is happening on the lectern, and the interactive whiteboard the interactive whiteboard including the content presented on it (Figure 3).

The video recording starts in the simplest way with a click on the start button of the touch panel and is ended with a stop button. The recorded video can then be viewed for checking purposes and deleted again if necessary.

The sound is recorded in high quality via a wireless headset and an audio processor.

Two video preview monitors show the preview of the currently selected video source and the output image corresponding to the later instructional video.

Access

Access to the studio is as easy as recording the videos. The instructional video studio can be booked by all university employees via the Outlook calendar "Room M 606" accessible from the university network.

Students and external persons can also be granted access upon request.

A brief personal briefing will be given on the first visit. Subsequent appointments are then usually attended alone.

Recording scenarios

As already mentioned in the Functional description section, the instructional video studio offers six different recording scenarios, which are explained in detail below. Further scenarios are quite conceivable.

The individual scenarios use different video sources, but some also use the same video source. The focus of the operating concept was deliberately not on the technology, but on the recording scenarios from a methodological point of view.

The following six recording scenarios are planned:
