History of the Advanced Electromagnetics Group

The beginnings of our group date back to 1956. It was then that Prof. Dr. Eugen Philippow founded the Institute of General and Theoretical Electrical Engineering with the departments of General Electrical Engineering, Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Electrical Measurement Technology. Just three years later, his analyses of the development of science justified the need to introduce a course of study in theoretical electrical engineering. From 1968, Prof. Philippow headed the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, which was now assigned to the Section for Information Technology and Theoretical Electrical Engineering (INTET). In year 1985, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hermann Uhlmann became head of the group - initially on a temporary basis, then on a regular basis.

As part of the restructuring of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the Institute of Information Technology was established at the beginning of 2005, which is home to six other departments in addition to our own.

After the retirement of Dr. Uhlmann in 2007, the provisional management of our group went to Dr. Gernot Scheinert and Dr. Hartmut Brauer for two years, before Hannes Töpfer was appointed university professor and head of our group on July 1, 2009.

Apart from the Institute of Information Technology, our department is also integrated into the cross-faculty Institute for Micro- and Nanotechnologies IMN MacroNano®.
