5G-RACOM - 5G for Resilient and Green RAil COMmunications

Subproject: Evaluation of hybrid network protocols and multipath technologies.

Link Overall Project

The vision of 5G-RACOM is to create, through research and innovation, the most sustainable, cost-efficient, high-performance, time-oriented and competitive customer-oriented  mode of transport in Europe. The basis for this is the development of the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) into a communication system based on 5G that ensures energy-efficient, robust and future-proof operation through a hybrid network architecture and seamless integration of public and private mobile networks. Such a hybrid and adaptive railroad communication system enables railroad applications to take advantage of the multitude of available communication carriers without being dependent on a specific radio access technology.

The focus of the Ilmenau University of Technology in the overall project is on the investigation of multipath solutions for reliable communication over multiple radio systems to meet railway-specific quality of service requirements. The emphasis is on the architecture of the multipath solution as well as algorithms for controlling traffic flows. The Franco-German project is being managed by Deutsche Bahn and SNCF. Other partners in the project include Kontron, Funkwerk and the TU Chemnitz.
