Research Group SigMaSense

The Technical University of Ilmenau and the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing IZFP have been cooperating since 2014 in the field of innovative signal processing concepts for non-destructive testing.

For this purpose, a new project research group was created in 2018 in the EMS department and as part of the Fraunhofer Attract funding program as an external research group with a permanent location in Ilmenau. Their focus is on signal acquisition and processing in the context of acquiring intelligent material data. The SigMaSense group (signal processing for material data acquisition with intelligent sensor technology) uses innovative methods of signal acquisition such as compressed sensing, which allow a considerable degree of redundancy in data acquisition to be avoided by using prior knowledge about the object to be examined.

This makes it possible to adapt the sensor systems with the help of existing prior knowledge and thus to arrive at a cognitive sensor system that optimally parameterizes itself for the current question in order to obtain the currently relevant information with as little effort as possible.
