“Broadcast Production-as-a-Service” – Dynamic production environments based on modern software architectures

The major challenges of today's media production include the increasing need for additional content, as well as the increasing agility of production specifications and the associated cost increases.

Purely software-based signal processes operated on independent computer platforms can be the crucial link between requirement and solution because they provide the missing plus in flexibility, scalability and cost efficiency.

The lecture will shed light on how a dynamic production environment differs from the classic one and how modern IP and cloud technologies can be used to implement the concept in practice.

Using concrete practical examples, the principles of Software-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service are explained and their importance for flexible and scalable production environments in broadcasting is explained.

Finally, the advantages of a dynamic production environment based primarily on software and independent hardware and possible success factors for different scenarios are highlighted.

Axel Kern Senior Director Cloud and Infrastructure Solutions With a 30+ year history in the broadcast and pro-audio industry, Axel has spent the last 13 years at Lawo. As part of his role, he is responsible, among other things, for the coordinated implementation of strategic goals with regards to cloud-based and infrastructure solutions across Lawo's entire product landscape and for the further development of HOME, Lawo's central IP infrastructure management platform. With a master degree in engineering (Media Technology, TU Ilmenau), he held various roles as product manager in the broadcasting sector, including international positions at DHD Audio, Harman International Industries / Studer and Lawo.

Zu den großen Herausforderungen der heutigen Medienproduktion gehören der steigende Bedarf zusätzlicher Inhalte, sowie die zunehmende Agilität von Produktionsvorgaben und damit verbundene Kostensteigerungen.

Auf unabhängigen Rechnerplattformen betriebene, rein Software-basierende Signalprozesse können das entscheidende Bindeglied sein zwischen Anforderung und Lösung, denn sie liefern das fehlende Plus an Flexibilität, Skalierbarkeit und Kosteneffizienz.

Im Vortrag wird beleuchtet, wie sich eine dynamische Produktionsumgebung von der klassischen unterscheidet, und wie moderne IP- und Cloud-Technologien genutzt werden können, um das Konzept in der Praxis umzusetzen.

Anhand konkreter Praxisbeispiele werden die Prinzipien von Software-as-a-Service und Infrastruktur-as-a-Service erläutert und ihre Bedeutung für flexible und skalierbare Produktionsumgebungen im Rundfunk erklärt. Abschließend werden die Vorteile einer dynamischen, vorwiegend auf Software und unabhängiger Hardware basierender Produktionsumgebung und mögliche Erfolgsfaktoren für verschiedene Szenarien beleuchtet.

Axel Kern blickt auf eine über 30-jährige Erfahrung in der Rundfunk- und Pro-Audio-Branche zurück, davon die letzten 13 Jahre bei Lawo. Im Rahmen seiner Rolle ist er unter anderem verantwortlich für die koordinierte Umsetzung strategischer Ziele im Hinblick auf Cloud-basierte und Infrastrukturlösungen in der gesamten Lawo-Produktlandschaft, sowie für die Weiterentwicklung von HOME, Lawo‘s IP-Infrastruktur Management Plattform. Als Diplom-Ingenieur (Medientechnologie, TU Ilmenau) war er in verschiedenen Funktionen international als Produktmanager im Broadcast-Bereich tätig, unter anderem bei DHD Audio, Harman International Industries / Studer und Lawo.
