Service robots to relieve the burden on clinics

TEDIRO GmbH was founded in May 2020 by Anke Mayfarth and Christian Sternitzke. The company develops mobile robots for gait training on forearm supports to enable patients to be mobilized and discharged more quickly and to increase the capacity of acute and rehabilitation clinics. Thanks to this unique business idea, TEDIRO was awarded the IQ Innovation Prize for Central Germany in 2021 and was one of the top 50 start-ups in Germany in the same year.

Back in 2016, Prof. Horst-Michael Gross, Head of the Department of Neuroinformatics and Cognitive Robotics at Ilmenau University of Technology, submitted a request to the Waldkliniken Eisenberg for a mobile robot application in the healthcare sector. Anke Mayfarth was working in the management team there at the time. She immediately saw great potential for gait training with forearm crutches, as this is usually a rather monotonous task for therapists.

As a result, the Waldkliniken Eisenberg, TU Ilmenau, MetraLabs GmbH and the health insurance company Barmer joined forces and developed an initial prototype. Anke Mayfarth met Christian Sternitzke, who holds a doctorate in industrial engineering, through MetraLabs GmbH, a spin-off of TU Ilmenau in the field of service robotics. Together, they continued to develop the project, which was spun off from MetraLabs and became TEDIRO GmbH in May 2020.

The mobile robots are equipped with a camera that takes a depth image of the patient during rehabilitation and records the skeletal data. The robot then analyzes the data and evaluates the quality of the procedure. For example, it recognizes whether a patient has made mistakes or whether there are deviations from the desired movements. The patient is then given recommendations for improving the training using integrated voice output.

With its innovative approach, TEDIRO GmbH aims to ensure the quality of treatment in clinics and support clinic staff in their work. In the long term, TEDIRO would like to offer even more therapies that can be carried out with a mobile robot.
